There was an interesting article this week by Fast Company which states that Adele offered to include her mega selling album '21' on Spotify, but on the condition it was only accessible to paying subscribers, Spotify reportedly turned this down because as Fast Company say 'it did not want to split up its content catalog, so as to create separate music libraries for paying subscribers and freemium users' There are premium exclusives on Spotify but these are usually pre-releases and are available to all subscribers soon after release.
Whilst we are on this subject there is a great article on the ever reliable The Pansentient league blog describing The seven types of artist on Spotify.
Before we go on, it is time for a Brazen plug, the teenage daughter of my Cousin has just released her debut single and it was added to Spotify this week, it was this weeks record of the week on BBC Radio Wales. Runaway by Queenie May.
The album that garnered the most reviews from our Website sources this week was Young & Old, the second album from Husband/Wife Duo Tennis, produced with Patrick Carney of The Black Keys and described by the Duo as 'Stevie Nicks going through a Motown phase'. It received mainly Positive reviews with Music OMH describing it as 'Bigger, bolder (Than their Debut) but still retaining an engaging charm, it is a highly impressive melodic triumph.'
Next came Freedom of Speech (Not Available USA), the second album from Mercury Prize winner Speech Debelle. Like her debut, the album has received extremely mixed reviews with a 5/5 from The Skinny calls it 'Absorbing, epic, heartfelt and delicately nuanced - a marvellous album.' whilst NME gave it a 6/10 and said 'There are moments when her A-Level Debating Club earnestness gets the better of her.'
The most viewed album on Spotimy this week was also Young & Old from Tennis, closely followed by Our Version of Events, the debut album from Scottish soul singer Emeli Sande, described by the BBC as 'A charming and occasionally moving record full of care and polish, effort and grace.' but the NME called it 'A combination of good songwriting, and un-originality'
Next came Form & Control the second album from Phenomenal Handclap Band, a Psych-Soul band from New York City, although not well received from our review sources
Again the Best reviewed album this week is unfortunately only available in the USA at this time, Angels Of Darkness, Demons Of Light 2 by Earth, the album was recorded at the same time as their predecessor "Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light I" which strangely is not available on Spotify. It received full marks from the Guardian and 9's from Subba Cultcha and Drowned In Sound. Next came Young Man in America (Not USA), Anais Mitchell's follow up to the acclaimed Hadestown described by the BBC as 'A marvel of a record from start to finish'
